To accommodate the many needs of our preschoolers, many diverse activities are made available to them throughout the day. Our program's curriculum is designed to accommodate the developmental level and rate of each child. We provide hands-on learning experiences to foster independence and natural curiosity. Lesson plans are developed to provide a variety of age-appropriate activities, which will allow your child to have choices in his or her environment, explore and learn freely through play.

CREATIVE PLAY
The classroom's are informally arranged into areas of interest such as blocks, dolls, books, puzzles, games, etc. Children are free to play and discover their surroundings while having fun and interacting with their friends and teachers.

ART & MUSIC
Art and music activities are dispersed throughout your child's day in his or her classroom. For children 3 and older, the Art room is where they learn about famous artists and participate in many hands on projects led by the RECC Art Director. These projects range from making a simple painting to creating fossils and artifacts for the annual Dinosaur Museum. Be sure to have plenty of room on your refrigerator to display many great works of art. In the Music room, toddlers and older children learn songs, rhythms, and dances led by our musical team, Milk & Cookies. Don't be surprised when your son or daughter comes home singing a childhood classic word for word.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The RECC Physical Education Director is responsible for helping your child develop age appropriate motor skills and physical abilities. From soccer to gymnastics, jumping on one foot to running at full speed, your child will enjoy indoor and, when weather permits, outdoor physical activities. During the summer program, this also includes daily swimming lessons in the pool for children three and older closely supervised by licensed water safety instructors.

MATH & SCIENCE
To help your child become familiar with number concepts, frequent counting of objects and children is routine. Learning about shapes and space and time relationships are units that are built into the annual curriculum. In addition, the Science room allows your child to explore the wonders of nature, the universe and beyond.

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

Creative Curriculum

Emphasises early literacy.

Naming objects and encouraging conversation are a big part of the day as your child learns to master verbal communication. This is achieved by looking at books, story telling, role-play, puppetry, speech games, a writing table and show and tell. Firsthand experiences of the children are discussed at every opportunity.

FIELD TRIPS
On occasion, we are able to provide an opportunity to take your child on a field trip to places of interest in the Syracuse area. Trips in the past included the Museum of Science and Technology, the pumpkin farm and Burnet Park Zoo. They have been both fun and educational for our students.

BRINGING THE OUTSIDE IN
We are able to invite guests to speak to or perform for our special captive audience regularly. In the past, these have included performances by the Syracuse Symphony, children's plays and operas, discussions about safety by our local expert, "Captain Safety" and lessons on dental hygiene given by "Mr. Tooth". Representatives from the police and fire departments and ambulatory services have also given age appropriate presentations. Bringing the outside in takes the children out of the classroom and puts them into a new environment to stimulate comprehension and learning.

LEARNING TOOLS
We are prepared to help your child prosper in the new millennium. For children three and older, visits to the computer room allow them to learn how to use a mouse and think analytically as they play simple but challenging games. We also use tape recorders, films and books, of course computers, to enhance the learning process.
